Mode two operates at freeway speeds. The motor/mills work with the planetary gearsets, so the EVT is capable of an infinite vary of gear ratios similar to a repeatedly variable transmission. CVTs are identified for optimizing gasoline economy, but can’t deal with heavy loads. GM’s model of the CVT does so by locking the planetary gearsets to let the 4 heavy-duty fastened gears - still probably the most efficient solution to handle power and fuel financial system-take over and handle a load like trailer towing.
