cotton Coulson Recently, while on assignment in St. Exposure times depend on the strength of the wind and the effect you want to achieve. Water tops a dam in Cuilapa, Guatemala, after heavy rains in October 2011. Photograph by Carsten Peter, National Geographic photographer Carsten Peter shot this tornado in South Dakota. These weather elements add mood and mystery to the photograph. These violent twisters form when the up drafts of air that supply storms with warm, humid air become a vortex, or high-speed whirlwind. Near constant gale-force winds regularly fuel up to hundred-foot waves. This is after the sun has set and the sky becomes a beautiful gradient from pink to purple.
