In 1974 I was urged to go immediately to Afghanistan - as it was an open secret that Russia was plotting to invade. They had for this reason completed the Shelang Pass over the Hindu Kush mountains thus giving them access from Russia into the fertile valleys of Afghanistan. At that time, I knew nothing about Afghanistan and indeed could find no books giving information on that country except that, apart from Chile, they produced the best lapis lazuli and were excellent craftsmen of handmade knives and silver jewelry.
